1. Introduction

Welcome to SplitSettle (referred to as the "App", "we", "us", or "our"). We are committed to safeguarding your personal data and ensuring that your transparency rights are fully respected. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, store, share, and protect your information when you download, install, access, or use the SplitSettle mobile application and associated web interfaces.

By creating a SplitSettle account, you acknowledge that you have read and understood the rules regarding transaction logging, manual friend connections, and group calculations outlined herein. If you do not agree with these principles, please do not use the App.

2. Information We Collect

In order to provide our core bill-splitting services, we collect specific parameters of data. This allows us to calculate balances accurately, identify who owes who, and push real-time updates inside your shared groups.

Category Collected Elements Primary Purpose
Account Profile Display Name, Email Address, Profile Picture, and Phone Number. Enables authentication, and allows friends to invite you to new groups.
Transaction Data Expense values, split ratios, item descriptions, invoice photos, and repayment statuses. Core calculations of net balances, ledger tracking, and payment validation.
Social Circles Manually generated friendship connections and group memberships. Allows you to add friends to groups and split bills directly.
Device Metadata IP address, OS version, device language, and crash log diagnostics. Security monitoring, rate limiting, debugging, and continuous UI performance adjustments.

Note: SplitSettle does not collect or store your credit card or bank login credentials directly. All repayments made via linked external APIs (e.g. Stripe, PayPal) are processed securely through those providers. We only receive verification tokens indicating success or failure of repayment.

3. How We Use Your Data

We process your data primarily to deliver, enhance, and debug our shared expense features. These activities fall under performance of contract and legitimate interests:

  • Ledger & Net Balance Math: We automatically add, subtract, and simplify debts between members of your groups (e.g., Debt Simplification algorithms).
  • Push & Email Alerts: Notifying you when someone adds you to a bill, requests settling up, comments on an expense, or updates a repayment.
  • Fraud Prevention: Detecting anomalous logins, multi-account creations, or suspicious transaction volumes.
  • Product Refinements: Running localized statistical assessments of how many expenses are successfully split to design simpler layout paradigms.

4. How Information is Shared

Because bill splitting is fundamentally collaborative, sharing is native to the App. Your information is shared under the following conditions:

Shared with Group Members:

Any person in a group with you can see your profile name, picture, email, and phone number (if you allow searchability). They will also view details, comments, and receipt images for any expenses you add to that group.

Third-Party Service Providers:

We work with trusted partners to host servers, deliver emails/notifications, and process errors. These partners have zero permission to use your personal information for their own marketing campaigns.

5. Interactive Privacy Center

Our Privacy Center puts you in control. Toggle the permission configurations below to see how our app logic restricts data exposure, and check your calculated Privacy Rating in real-time.

Incognito Settler Maximum restriction
Location Services Metadata Use GPS metadata to automatically pick default currency for local bills.
Third-Party Pay Integration Connect Stripe or PayPal directly to execute repayments inside the app.

We respect these configurations natively. If you toggle any of these parameters off, our back-end removes associated tokens instantly.

6. Data Security & Retention

We prioritize the security of your ledger entries and personal details. We employ industry-standard protocols to guarantee security:

  • Encryption: All database storage and payload transmissions are encrypted using standard AES-256 protocols and TLS 1.3 network envelopes.
  • Storage Durability: Ledgers and balances are archived securely. If a group is closed and all transactions are settled, detail assets (such as receipt images) are deleted within 90 days.
  • Access Limits: Our internal database administrators have restricted access to transaction records, auditable at all times.

7. Your Rights & Choices

You have full authority over your data. Depending on your jurisdiction (such as CCPA, GDPR), you have several core options:

Account Deletion & Data Purge

You can request complete deletion of your account directly in the app profile dashboard or by emailing our privacy team. However, please note that any transaction descriptions, split records, or comments you wrote inside *other* users' active groups may remain visible as historic record context to preserve group ledger accuracy, but your name will be replaced by "Deleted User".

Data Portability

You can export a CSV or PDF copy of all your financial ledgers and personal metadata via the settings menu at any time.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Browse through quick clarifications concerning how SplitSettle secures your privacy:

Absolutely not. We do not sell your personal profile data, friend lists, or transaction patterns to third-party ad brokers or monetization platforms. Our revenue is generated strictly from premium subscriptions and payment service integrations.

No. Your group partners can only see visual receipt files, split proportions, and whether you marked a bill as settled. Your payment passwords, Stripe cards, or PayPal credentials are processed on separate layers and are never shared.

We keep transaction ledgers active as long as your account exists. This allows you to verify historical payments. If you initiate account deletion, we immediately remove your identity references, and clear raw receipt files after 90 days.
